Stateline bridge

Before I left Spokane Washington, I tried to document all the depression era bridges that adorned the city.

This is State Line bridge, at the Idaho Washington border on what was once Hwy 10 the main route before I-90 was constructed. This bridge was torn down and replaced after this shot.

Hey Ben,

This is a cool old structure. Considering it's mainly concrete which on it's own isn't always attractive, I think converting this to a B&W is the way to go. B&W which stresses contrasts can enhance an image like this.

Try it in B&W, I did it quickly using Silver Effex 2, and I really liked what I saw.

Cool old bridge indeed. Is it still standing? Might be worth shooting near dawn or dusk? and yes b&w is a good idea, too.
There was very cool, and very old concrete bridge crossing the Arkansas River between Little Rock and North Little Rock. The tore it down, read blew it up, a couple years ago and replaced it with a modern, ugly, imho, metal monstrosity! UGH!!

Hey Ben,

I like the B&W version a lot. Maybe it's just me, but for some reason structures like this scream B&W no matter how good the color version is.

Thanks jim, before I downloaded Nik, I could not make a B&W to save myself. Now choosing the right preset is still a challenge, but much easier. I will keep this in mind for the rest of my bridges. I am pretty sure I did this one with my 17TSE, not sure I could capture it again now that I have sold that lens.

Hey Ben,

I feel you!

For my B&W, I pretty much just always just always use Nik Silver Efex 2, and I always just have 2 presets I use so it's simple. I have gone through them all a million times, but it's always just 2 that I use, so its easy to convert now.

I use High Structure (Harsh) or High Structure (Smooth). That's it. I just ignore the rest of the presets now. And most of the time I just use the High Structure (Harsh) and then I will tweak the contrast to taste after using it.
