Soft Light

Hi Ben,

Your title suits this well. The rich color that came out of no direct light is lovely. The only thing I'm unsure of is the brightly lit orange formation in the middle left. It draws the eye out of the frame. My suggestion is to crop about a fifth to a quarter off of the left.

Thanks Tim, I will consider this.

I like it. The GC with good light is always a nice subject and in this case the indirect light is great. Tim's crop suggestion might be a good one as it seems to drag my view farther down the canyon.

I like the original crop best, of these. But I think I would like the 2nd with maybe half the sky cropped off, keeping more of the foreground. You'll get tons of options here. :)
I also prefer the softer light and contrasts in the 2nd and 3rd. But that may just be me. Wonderful lighting and view!

Thanks Berry, I had to start from scratch for the last two because the first one was cropped before saving. The main difference is that the first one is a bit darker.

Beautiful light and colors. I like the golden glow on the rock. However, the darker formation on the right seems to pull attention. I see you tried to crop the left side off, but I would leave it in, and experiment with the right side.

Hey Ben,

Lot's of ways you can go with this shot. It's interesting to see the different suggestions. I think it's one of those shots where you really can't go wrong.

But with that said, I am actually leaning towards the square comp. :)

Thanks Sasha. you probably know the place well, this was my first time there, but no excuses, I suspect I should have used a long FL here. This was shot with a 17TSE shifted I believe to offset the horizon. I will look at you suggestions.

I like the original the best. I would darken (dodge effect) the brighter left side a little, but still leave brighter than the right.
Thanks Pete, this is how I am leaning.

Thanks Jim, you are correct, lots of options, some would have been better dome in camera, as most have to do with what part of the scene to include. This was a 21mpx image. If it would have been the 5DSR more cropping would have been more feasible.

This and the other Grand Canyon image were taken 3 years ago and have never made it to my walls. I could not put my finger on it, but the suggestions here are giving me insight.
