Snowshoeing

I rented snowshoes last Feb and tried my first and last snowshoe trip. As you can see from the bent poles, I fell a few times and bent the poles trying to get back up with a heavy backpack. I also tore something in my right shoulder which has caused persistent pain for which I think and operation will be required.

Anyway, it is a form of transportation. Just a whimsical post.

I used to use a pair to stomp out paths in my back yard in Salt Lake City and fill bird feeders. Only used them once up near Mt. St. Helens since I moved to the NW. A very peaceful way to trek around the woods if you can get away from the snowmobilers.

Works great until you topple sideways and end up upside down in deep powder. But, it's like anything, takes some practice to become competent, which I never did. They just sit in my garage. I wish I had that ability to snowshoe 10-15 miles in somewhere, I think there could be some good pictures.

That was my plan, all the good places around here are closed in winter, so I planned to snowshoe into a place with a good view of Mt Timpanogos. They groom the highway for snowboards, snowshoes and cross country. I went up that road until I found a moose sprawled over the entire road, and not looking like it was going to move. I kept stepping on the shoes with my 45 degree foot angle.

I did something like that the first time I tried snowshoeing in the Uintas. Happily this was long before the days of ubiquitous phone cameras and YouTube so I got to untangle myself on my own terms. It does get a lot easier with practice.
