Shore Acres Rose

Shore Acres State Park along the Oregon coast is the site of a timber baron's mansion in the early 1900's. The mansion itself burned down, was rebuilt, and ultimately the property was donated to the state of Oregon for a park. The newer version of the mansion was razed in 1948. One of the remaining features on the property was a very extensive garden that is still maintained.

This is a shot of a rose just starting to open from a visit a number of years back:

Super cool Alan. That park always struck me as having a funny sounding name.
The mansion and its grounds were quite the spread in its glory days and the garden was just a small part of the grounds. The concrete pads for the tennis courts are still there just to the north of the parking area. The shelter viewing area near the parking lot overlooking the rocky coastline was the site of the mansion. I toured the gardens on an October visit (when this shot was taken) and had to dodge all of the volunteers stringing up lights for the Christmas display which is one of the largest of its kind along the Oregon coast with over 300,000 lights.

Sounds a like an interesting place - strangely I never heard of it till now.

A nice image of the rose.
Thanks - If you take the road leading to Cape Arago from Charleston you drove right past Sunset Bay State Park as well as Shore Acres. There are trails leading from Sunset Bay up to Shore Acres. Cape Arago was originally a donation to Oregon Parks by L. J. Simpson - the lumber baron who owned Shore Acres.
