Shiprock Sunset

Shiprock Sunset

Shiprock, a majestic inselberg, rises prominently above the desert plain southwest of Farmington, New Mexico. It stands so tall and grand that it can be seen from as far as 20 miles away.

Last weekend, I was gifted with the chance to see an ethereal spectacle at this location.

As a desert storm loomed in the distance, the heavens above staged an incredible display. Delicate cirrus clouds, high in the sky, were brushed with shades of gold, while the moisture-rich clouds beneath drifted gracefully eastward. As the sun began its descent, the hues deepened, weaving the sky into a radiant, golden tapestry.

And then there was Shiprock. Resolute and awe-inspiring, its light brown facade deepened to a richer shade, while its southern cliff was bathed in a shimmering light. My heart raced, captivated by the sheer beauty of the moment. It was a reminder that sometimes, it's all about being in the right place at the right time.

That evening at Shiprock was undeniably magical!

Nice image, Oliver. I like the color scheme in this one and the cloud activity. About how far away are you at this point? I've never been there.....

Thanks, Kurt.

I went on Indian Service Route 13, there are a couple of turnouts, I think this shot was taken on the 2nd last next to the dike, taken at 100mm focal length.

shiprock always looks different, but with the orange/yellow sky this looks like something from mars. very cool looking!

Awesome! Love the shape of the clouds on how they crown Shiprock. The coloring in the sky has a very painterly feel to it.

Thanks, Pepper.

I have always loved these monolithic rock formations, the good thing is it's on an open plain with easy access, photographers love it.

I drove around the Indian service route 13 until I found a spot with clear views to all directions, the shot was 15 image stitched pano.
