Shepperds Dell

Shepperds Dell is a small grotto along the Historic Highway in the Columbia River Gorge. I have stopped to shoot a waterfall at this location on countless numbers of occasions but always wondered what this spot looked like from the air. I spent some time looking for it when I was up in the Rooster Rock area in late May and this is a capture from that scouting trip. The Dell is just behind the bridge along the Historic Highway. This particular spot got hit fairly hard by the 2017 fire and where you once drove through this spot in a corridor of tall fir trees is now all wide open space to the left of the grotto.

I am trying out a new camera profile Jameel created for the Mavic 3 Pro lenses and this image was processed using a linear custom profile he made up for the 166mm lens system.

C&C always welcome.

I can't see the waterfall, Alan. Is the flow low this time of year?
Doug - I mentioned the waterfall in passing but it's going to be difficult to find a spot that will let me shoot it from a distance. To be honest I was happy to even be able to find it along the basalt cliffs as this was an initial scouting trip. The waterfall is tucked in behind the cliffs just to the right of the bridge and to see it from the air I am going to have to go at least 1/4-1/2 mile farther off to the left to see back into that pocket. I'm not sure I can do that from the point where I launched my drone although I will be making an effort to do this. I may need to launch from somewhere along the historic highway to get that shot.

Very nice view, Alan. I think I now where this is and should try exploring this from the air when I am there next

What do you think of the profiles. The linear ones need a very different approach to PP and esp. useful when there is a lot of content in the highlight area.

Thanks Jameel - Rooster Rock State Rec Area and the Benson Rec Area are the two I have played around with this spring that seemed to work quite well for parts of the waterfall corridor. Latourel and Shepperds Dell aren't marked as no fly zones but both could be problematic for flights over people as they are small venues with quite a few visitors. There is a trail at Rooster Rock that goes east from the parking area that should offer a better view of Shepperds Dell. The trail area was flooded when I was last there in May due to high water in the Columbia so I had to fly from the parking area for this image.

PP with this scene was a fair amount of work although I do like the color balance in the camera profile. Did you use a commercially produced Macbeth chart when you set up these profiles or some other technique?

I had bought the chart a while ago from Xrite - so yes a commercially produced one.

This looks great Alan, what a nice view. I think a little more contrast would be nice. It seems like it's on the edge of being too bright.

Thanks Jim - I think your thought of it being a bit bright is accurate. I have created a bunch of new camera profiles for my drone imagery since I posted this and would likely do it a bit differently now.
