Point Arena Sunset

Most of my work is done in the Landscape Genre...and a lot of it is ends up being Long Exposures, I just like them, have been doing them for several years now. New technology has changed the way I shoot them sometimes, but I still am drawn to the dynamics and impact that LE images have...this is one of my favorites from this year, from an April trip to Northern California and the Point Arena area. The technology change for this image was the use of the Smooth Reflections App, and the stacking in camera of multiple 20 second exposures.

I am always open to comments or crits...I find that one way I can improve my work is through feedback from other photographers...

Travis,
Beautiful image, your comp and the LE works so well here. The light on the FG cliffs is drawing me in.
Great job !

Dean

Thank you Dean. We scouted out for a while leading up to sunset, and the shoreline cliffs were what I was looking for up and down the coast...I was glad to find this area...will probably have to go back again...

Stunning.
Very kind of you, thanks!

Hey Travis,

This is a really cool shot, love the flow of the clouds and the color in them. Along with the cliff, these create great leading lines in this.

That Smooth Reflections app is really great. I can't use it, since I shoot Nikon, but I will say I am slightly envious. :)

I do something similar, in fact for years I have used the Multiple Exposure setting in Nikon cameras where it will take up to 7 images and blend them together. It can produce similar results most times. Otherwise most often, I simply take a series of long exposures, and then layer them together in Photoshop and use the Median Blend option in Smart Layers and it can also produces similar results.

Great shot. I like that the cliff and the rocks in the water create parallel leading lines.
Thanks Ryan! Leading lines are a lot of fun to work with and are great composition elements.

Thanks Jim. I am sure you have seen the discussions about the other benefit of the SR app...and that is a huge decrease in Noise, especially in the shadows when pulled up...its amazing. It might be the bigger benefit than having absolute control over how long to expose the image for without worrying about being over or under exposed.

Yeah, I think the SR option is really great. I sure wish Nikon would add the ability to add apps to the camera like Sony did, I wonder if there is some legal or technical reason why Canon or Nikon doesn't implement something similar? My alternatives are just a poor man's alternative to the SR app.

As a side note, I think I need to add more "smilies" as the current selection is a bit weak for me.

Travis - I don't know anything about the Smooth Reflections App, but I do know I love this image. Movement in the sky, movement in the water and beautiful light on the cliffs. Great capture! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you sir. Its a great app, it has nice potential, there are times where it is not the best option...but I am learning to read those conditions and do a more traditional LE for those times.

One of my favorite areas. The whole coastline up there is beautiful and a lot less crowded than the more famous areas further south! Really nice render on this with the long exposure - especially with the clouds forming leading lines into the lighthouse.

Thanks! This was my first trip up to this part of CA...not going to be the last, I loved the lack of people.
