The ferry from Oban to Barra, approx 90 miles, 4hrs on a hot, calm and misty day.

Lismore lighthouse, another of the many lighthouses built by the Stevenson family.

Further into the trip and moving out into the surprisingly calm open Ocean. This is Ardnamurchan point lighthouse built by the Stevenson's. Mull is the mountainous island, with Muck in the foreground and Skye just visible through the haze.

Finally arriving at Castlebay, the main town in Barra pop 1100.

Off to the campsite in the far North of the island a mere 11miles away and a quick exploration of the local beach, Traigh Sguurabhal (Sguraval beach)

Beautiful lighthouses and views from the ferry. I do have to imagine there are times when that water could be far less than complacent and the ferry ride could be a gut churner. I like the water view of Castlebay.

Alan, throughout our trip their was little or no swell with wave heights of approximately 2ft. Today my app tells me that there is 6ft of swell with a period of 9s, just about perfect for seascape photography. Newport Oregon has 4ft swell with 9s period. I have been forced off of Iona, another Hebridean island, before the ferries shut down because of a forecast of 20ft swell. The seas here are often very stormy. Ken

Sounds about right for Newport, OR during the summer months. Waves often look like something in a public swimming pool along the Oregon coast in the summer and I get easily bored watching them. Winter is much more fun for waves and swells but I am not taking ferry rides anywhere. I have been on a ferry going from the Olympic Peninsula (Port Townsend) up to Victoria B.C. during the winter once with high swells. The ferry interior walls were painted green and my wife blended in with the wall color  20' swells sounds like a good time to just shut the service down.

What a really awesome location. The first and the last are my favorites. You can never go wrong with a lighthouse!
