Noticed something strange...

I noticed something strange, so far I've just once seen my message in the 'new posts' section of all the new posts/answers and new threads that I've placed on this forum in the few weeks I'm on this forum. By the way, not a single answer from members, responding to my threads/posts, reached the position of 'new post' on the forum.

I wonder how this is possible, because I assume this no only happens to my posts/threads etc., but also happen with other participants and ultimately means lots of mutual messages are not visible/read/noticed by members of this forum, or do you need to get notifications to know what is going on in every corner of this forum?

I tried it for 2 days, but it's really impossible to check all messages via the front page section 'forums' and not via the section 'new posts', but for sure...it's a good way to check how many messages you miss as a member on this forum, absolutely more than you think!

I guess this could really be improved, various forums - which were also set up using the same software - have a 'what's new' button and ALL new posts, new threads etc. are actually visible and also all responses from members to already published posts and threads are included, so it should definitely be possible. Of course I don't know if the present setup was a conscious choice when starting the forum, otherwise, as a member I'd really prefer to see a broader display of the new threads, new posts and responses from members to several posts on this forum.

Very much like this forum, but at the moment I've the idea really missing interesting content by members this way.

the new posts feature works for me, so it might be a setting you've changed.

If you go into your account page and then go to Settings make sure everything under the heading Receive a notification when someone... is checked. That's how mine is set up and the New Posts shows me every new post that goes up whether a new thread or a response to someone else's thread.

Hey Gerard,

How you are describing how you would like it to work, is how it works. At least it works that way for me. All new posts or old posts with new comments is displayed in What's New or New posts.

One caveat to that is if you look at one of those threads, and it was listed in the New Posts, Will now drop out of it because you looked at it, hence no longer new.

I don't believe I changed any personal settings like Alan did, and my New Posts functions as it should.

I am out in the desert tonight with my telescope so I can't really check any system settings. When I get back home tomorrow I will look at the settings for that and see if there are any options or loopholes I might have missed.

All the boxes have been checked from the start, so this can't be the problem, I think.

I can't see my own thread in the 'new posts' list and therefore don't notice whether someone has responded to this thread, for example. I haven't noticed anywhere else that there are a number of responses to this thread, I don't see them in the 'new posts' list, which is very strange since your reaction and reactions from other members they are indeed new posts! I have also never experienced that a thread just disappears from the list and you cannot longer see any responses to this thread.

As an example, because you've looked at them, you will never see your own threads in the new posts section.
That is quite weird, never experienced that a thread disappears, I think comments of members to a thread are new posts and should therefore appear in the 'new posts' section, something that doesn't happen as I have experienced.
In the long run you have a full-time job to go through all your threads and posts, quite a cumbersome and strange way to be active on this forum, also never heard in 20 years of visiting forums that your thread disappears after reading it once.

you've changed some of your settings. for example, your profile is blocked. by default i should be able to click on your name and see the posts and threads you've made, but i get an error message saying you've limited who can see your profile.

I can see the profile. Also I can see my thread in new posts when someone responds to it as well.
Well, I can't see my own threads in the 'new posts' section and I really think this has nothing to do with a profile being visible or not.
The problem is the fact I don't see my own thread and any responds in the 'new posts' section on the forum. For example, you can see this thread, with responds, but for me this thread is not visible in the 'new posts' section - if I want to see my own thread I have to go to the home page where all forums are listed or I have to log out, because then I can also see this thread in the 'new posts' section, but when I log in the thread has disappeared!
Apparently a thread that I created disappears once I have read the responds and then I can no longer see the thread at all and therefore none of the possible subsequent responds from members. Extremely strange, I have never experienced this in 20 years of visiting forums.

What you describe has me stumped as well. I visit a couple of forums that are using the same underlying software engine and all of them show me all new posts when I click on New Posts either from the New Posts tab under the Forums or am looking at New Posts on the main forum page.

I have been looking around for a setting that could/would impact this forum page behavior but nothing I can see appears to address this. My current Preferences include the following:

Everything below this is checked which I believe are the defaults.

One thing I have noticed is that when you post to a thread you will not see that in the New Posts listings since you have read everything in that thread. New Posts will only show threads that you have not already read. Your own new post does not count as an unread since you read it while you were posting it.

If someone else adds a comment to the thread it will show up under New Posts since you have not read the new comment.

Hey Gerard,

Here is a sceeen shot of my New Posts. You will notice a thread that I made, that I had Alan reply to so we could double check.

You will notice that my thread is now at the top of the list after Alan made a comment.

Also notice the time stamps on eaxh post, it shows them sequentially with the newest commented threads at the top of the list.

So this thread here, never shows up in your New Posts list after one of us comments?
