New from Topaz - AI Gigapixel

So I would first start off by saying that most of the images I sell are 24x36 or 20x30. However I do have occasion to print really large. In the past I have uses things like native PS, OnOne and others. But I just tried the new scaler from Topaz. I am really happy with the results. However I do use JPEGmini to make the images on the web load faster on my site. It only supports files up to 128M, so I am experimenting with scale to stay under that size.

Does anyone have a calculation for understanding how the resolution maps to the file size? As an engineer you think I would know how, but my brain seems not to be able to comprehend.

Hey Doug, I saw the advertisement for that but haven’t tried it yet.

What are you thinking on using this for? I couldn’t quite tell if you were using it to enlarge or to resize for the web.

My thought on it is it would have potential with some of my old photos that are only 6 or 12 mp is size.

As for the calculation... I have no clue.

The file size question has a lot of variables - for starters what is the bit depth of your resized image? Most of my edited images are stored at 16 bits. The lab that handles your printing probably wants 16 bits just for the extra color editions but if you are reducing for web color space 8 bits is likely fine. That will save you a ton of space for starters. Flatten the file if you have layers and the size drops even more (all of my Photoshop edited files have more than one layer as stored so they take up quite a bit of extra space). What kind of file does JPEGmini want as input? Photoshop .psd files or already as a jpeg? If jpeg when you do a "save as" in photoshop you can choose how lossy you can accept the conversion with the quality slider in Photoshop and drop the file size even more.

Topaz sent me an email flyer for AI Gigapixel but I haven't explored it much yet since I haven't made much of an effort to sell prints of my images.

JPEGmini only accepts JPG as input. It also knows if it has already been processed. I always flatten my images when done with processing but I also keep them at 16 bit.

I pay for my "habit" with sales in a few local galleries, otherwise I would not be able to afford all the toys. ;-) Most sales are 12x18 either paper or metal, but from time to time they want larger. I just sent off for a 40x60 of an image that was shot with a 16MP camera and am awaiting the results. Fingers crossed it is something I can sell or at least frame for the office.

I ended up purchasing it after playing for a while. I sell images in a few local galleries and want to be able to offer larger prints (read make more money! HA) I just sent one of my images from a 16MP body off for 40x60. Fingers crossed.
