New Baby on the Mountain

Some of you know I document the Wild Horses outside of Vegas in the Wheeler Pass HMA. This is my busy time up there, as it is foaling season. 1st new baby on the mountain, unfortunately momma doesn't look too great. I hope we get some more rain & get some forage growing on this side of the mountain.

As you can see mom is pretty thin. This is the part of documenting that breaks my heart. If she doesn't fatten up they may be removed from the range, and put in holding until the baby is weened and then separated & put up for adoption. If the mom is determined by the BLM vet to be in organ failure, then they will shoot her & the baby will go to foster until ready for adoption.

Wild Horse & Burro Act of 1971 states that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands. It is against the law to feed them, so normal people can't do anything to help when they are starving :(.

This is actually a sad story, Darcy. Too often rules are for when brains run out.
Yes it is. The BLM wants to bring them in, but they are on Forest Service Land so the BLM's hands are tied right now. This will be a very hard year again for our herd, as there is no forage due to drought, so I will be diligently watching. Hoping the horses that have moved around the mountain stay there where there is food and don't come back to this side.

Some excellent shots of the new filly and their plight pulls at the heartstrings. Our admiration and appreciation goes out to you for your work there.
