I know next to nothing about sailing. Being involved in Mobility Cup gave me an opportunity to learn a few things about the strategies involved in sailing, some of the rules and about the flags. Oh man, do sailors love their flags!! The start of a sailing race is an especially interesting time in the event. Boats are milling about behind the start line, which, as many of you know, is an imaginary line over water between two markers. When the horn sounds to start the race there is a mad dash for the start line and the strategy that seems to be successful is to position yourself upwind of the other competitors so that your sails, in effect, block their wind. Nasty but effective. The image below is exactly that scenario - the start.
