I am a rodeo junkie! That being said, I will shoot these events just about any chance I get. Last week the South Point Equestrian Center in Las Vegas hosted the PBR along with MBR finals. A young man I had met last year was riding, so I made it a point to get down there to watch him ride. Watching these young kids is a real treat. Lighting was my biggest issue since I don't use flash (mostly to not interfere with the official photographer's set up). All in all, most of my shots turned out pretty well. Biggest challenge was losing some detail after working on the noise reduction

You got some nice action here of these brave young cowboys.

I would like to know your shooting setup, does not seem like a flash would be required for daylight shots like this. If you could tell us your camera, lens, aperture ISO and shutter speed it would help.

Don't get me wrong, these are good as is, but maybe you were giving yourself a handicap.

These are super cool Teresa! What an exciting time that would be to capture these kids.

As to the noise, what camera are you shooting with?

Handicap is shooting indoors lol! Normally don't have an issue in this arena if it's barrel racing or full on rodeo events, but due to their set up, I think it changed the ambient light. Shot with Nikon D750, Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8, aperture, ISO and shutter speed varied. Tried to keep shutter around 500 and aperture around 4 to 5.6, ISO varied as well: 8000-12800

Thanks for the info, must have been pretty dark then. Sounds like you were using auto ISO.
It was a little darker than normal. I think the black curtains the event hung off to the sides and slightly behind the chutes maybe absorbed a certain amount. As for ISO, I manually adjusted it, although I could have set the samera to use auto.

Hey Teresa,

Well the D750 is one of the best cameras there is when shooting high iso, but with most any camera when you start getting up into the 8000-12,000 range there will be noise.

You could have tried shooting at f2.8 instead of f4 to 5.6, that would have allowed you to have gotten into the ISO 5000 to 6400 range while maintaining the shutter speed. Though I also think you could have been shooting at 1/200th to 1/250th.

I don't care for auto-ISO myself. If I need to raise the ISO, I want it to be a conscious decision. But I do know others do like using it.

What are you using for Noise Reduction?

I usually shoot f2.8, but wanted to try keeping of the background in focus. I typically don't care to bring my shutter down that low, as I seem to end up blurring the main subject too much, but something to play with next time I run into that lighting situation. Without looking, I', pretty sure I have my camera set to low on the NR, that being said, I use the noise reduction in Lightroom.
