Memory Card Serendipity

Once upon a time this was called camera roll serendipity but the result is the same either way - a shot you didn't take intentionally but discovered when you started looking at your results. I had no clue this shot was on the card until I started processing what all was on it but I must have accidentally tripped the shutter while making framing adjustments with the zoom lens at Myrtle Falls. I decided it made a curious abstract in any case.

More than an abstract. This was something people used to do back in the day - zooming during an exposure. This though is different in the the near elements are still, others are distorted. In any case a very interesting image.

Thanks Jameel - I do recall people doing this intentionally but never spent time trying for a result like this.

As I look at the shots that bracket this one there is a change in zoom from 24mm to 43mm and back to 24mm along with f/stop change from f/9 to f/18. The sequence of the 3 shots is only 9 seconds with this one in the middle. I am guessing that I must have inadvertently twisted the zoom ring and hit the shutter release while changing the f/stop.

Now the funny thing is, as I have tried this before... if you had actually tried to make this image you could never do it. But by accident? Sure it's super easy.

Thanks Jim - I'm not dead certain how I managed to do this. I can see from the bracket I was shooting in manual mode at 24mm in a tripod and changed the f/stop from f/9.0 to f/18.0 after chimping the first one. This one is in between those shots at 43mm f/9.0.

My own efforts at doing this intentionally have never really worked out either.
