This is from a couple of weeks ago in Northern Colorado by my daughters house. The Nature area there has the Poudre river running though it, but it's hard to get close to the river for the most part. But the road going by the nature area crosses the river on a bridge. So after running, I drove down the road to see if any geese were on it. I spotted them floating in the water, so I parked and walked up to the bridge, I was walking up an embankment, the geese could not see me, but as I got towards the bridge and the moment my head poked above the side guards and I could see the birds, they also instantly saw me and in a mass exodus flew off.
I don't photograph birds too much, but it's amazing as I was still probably 100 yards off from the birds and it was just my head rising above the bridge as I walked up, but they saw me and took off like crazy.
So glad I have the 50-400mm, I zoomed in quickly to frame the scene and I shot a few frames. This is at about 230mm. Not the perfect image, but I thought pretty good for just instantly pulling the camera up, zooming, focus, and shoot.
