As I'm sure most of you know, Manzanar is in the Eastern Sierras, in the Owens Valley. It was a relocation center for Japanese Americans from 1942 - 1945. Some of the guard towers still stand and there is an educational exhibit that, if you don't know a bit about the history, is well worth spending some time in. There are Japanese gardens built by the residents, with viewing stones that are placed so that the guard towers & barbed wire were not in the view so the residents could try to have some semblance of their previous lives. The remains of an apple orchard still bear fruit (or did when I was there some years back). At the foundation of what was a kendo studio, I could hear the slap of bare feet on wood floors, the sound of the wooden practice swords hitting bamboo armor & the kiais still echoed in the air. Adjacent to this shot is the cemetery & close by is a pet cemetery. This is the monument for pacification of spirits.
