Manly by Moonlight

You've all seen pictures of Lake Manly with people paddling on it or reflections of the mountains behind, so this will be something different. This was about an hour before sunrise 2 weeks ago, about 2 days before the full moon.

I did stick around for sunrise, such as it was. Cloudy, no color and just enough wind to eliminate any nice reflections and the crowds were already gathering. There had been a rather large party (4 or 5 vehicles) who were paddling by moonlight, but they had all the lights on their vehicles on (including rows of very bright LED or halogen bulbs), so shooting the paddlers who had small lights on was not an option.

This is really cool Monika! Love the way you worked the reflection and they way it winds into the scene. Did you capture this from up at the parking lot?

It's really too bad that even in nature everything has to be a party for the majority of people. Gone are the days where people would quietly go out and just enjoy nature. They are too self absorbed to realize that with all of the lights and noise they are ruining the whole purpose of being out in nature for themselves and others.

This was from out on the walkway to the right -- not the furthest right, but the middle one.

It was a totally different mood than when the sun came up & the crowds were there.

Having the sun come up dampens the mood of the moonlight but the crowds are just buzzkill letting you know its time to leave.

I can't believe that the NPS even let people use kayaks on that shallow water. Death Valley isn't a water park. Once the lake dries up there will be scars of footprints in the shallow water before they launched their kayaks that will take years to heal.

NPS has shut down the boating and is discouraging folks wandering out in the mud now for exactly the reasons you state.

A friend just sent me an article about how strong winds moved Lake Manly 2 miles north. Because it was so shallow, the NPS banned watercraft. It has since moved back (& was brown from stirring up the mud). But, yes, I wondered about how long it will take to heal the footprints from people wading out there.
