I used my Sony A7rIII and the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 Art last night for the eclipse. I chose to go wide so I could get a star field behind it and the moon is to the right of the beehive open cluster (M44). The camera/lens setup was guided on my AstroTrac. I like the way it turned out....

I like this Todd. Using a tracker is a great way to go with this. Perhaps making the background sky more black? That's something I would look at.

But I do like this, with one of my cameras I went with a wide vertical to capture the ground layer also. I had another that was wide, maybe close to this though I might have been a hair tighter. I liked seeing the stars next to the moon like you have in this, so I like how you were thinking! :)

Nice - I got to see cloud cover instead of the lunar show.
Well I wish you could have seen it. Bummer to have clouds. I’m surprised the skies were clear where I live, I usually get clouded out when unique events like this...

Thanks Jim.... the light pollution here is high, so getting the sky darker on this shot (which I experimented with) made the stars too dim. The exposure was 71” at iso 100 f/4. I didn’t take a separate exposure of the moon and blend it in, this was all one shot. Since everyone takes huge closeup shots of an eclipse, I decided to go wide for a different look. I have a tighter crop... you can see the cluster a little better here.

Todd,

Great images, I like them both. Love seeing the moon 'in context' like this, and your exposure length (made possible by tracking) really is spot on. Great color and still nice detail to be found at that the focal lengths you have displayed here. I would give a slight nod to the tighter crop, but really like them both. Tracking is the key on the fully eclipsed moon in order to get nice star shapes and no blurring due to moon motion across the sky.

Great job on this!
