Here's my take on it. Originally I had the sky darker and foreground lighter, but then I looked at the time of day the image was shot and realized it should be the opposite.

Far too much sky for me and just to try it I converted the image to Lab colour which should have allowed me to separate the largely sandy tones with curves. I think that it really hasn't worked very well. Again I find it interesting how soil tones like these are totally unknown here and in most of Europe. I also cropped a lot of the sky. Ken

My hack of the image. Multiple curves layers to brighten parts of the subject and add a little texture. Darkened down the bright cloud on the right and left sides as they were a bit distracting to me.

I also had that thought but made it bright anyway, not too good at making dark images so glad you did.

I also cut out some sky for the same reason. This looks pretty good to me

I am liking your idea with the crop Ken.
