Last night on Hadrian's Wall

The promise of a decent sunset brought me out onto Hadrian's Wall again. This is Walltown Crags and the wall used to run along the top but has now disappeared but magically the local 17th farmhouse is constructed from beautifully cut Roman Wall sized stones. Similarly the farmer's walls surrounding the fields are also Roman Wall sized. I was going to wait and see if the Aurora was going to make an appearance but the midges started biting and I had neither brought my headnet nor covered myself in insect repellent so back home while I still had some blood. You are welcome Trent. I have never cycled the whole route but have regularly cycled the middle section from Brampton, where I live, to Chollerford on the Tyne. This is, to my mind, the most interesting and hilliest section. My wife once walked the 84 miles from Bowness on Solway to Wallsend in 3 days something that I couldn't do. If the weather plays ball I will be out again this evening for another sunset shot with the sun illuminating the Northern side. Perhaps this image may bring back more memories. Ken

What an interesting area you live in. That is funny how the wall has disappeared but a farm house sprung up with the same rocks!

Hopefully the midges let photograph tonight. When they are that thick, getting a photo without a bunch of small OOF black smudges can be the hardest thing.

It shows that the highest aurora levels will be on Thursday and Friday. Of course, despite it being science, it doesn't seem to be an exact science when it comes to forecasting auroras.

Thanks Jim. The Physics department of one of the local Universities supply a free App with hour by hour Aurora forecasts. Really in high summer it is too bright unless we get a huge outburst. Winter is much better as we get many hours of darkness and with high pressure blockers to the East we often get days/ weeks of clear crisp days and cold cloudless nights. Ken
