Johnston Canyon Winter

It is awfully hot in California this weekend, so here are a couple of shots from the coldest day I've experienced (-35°F). These are both from Johnston Canyon in Banff taken last January. Any thoughts are welcome.

I really like the second one Kyle - that water "apron" at the bottom of the frozen falls adds a sense of activity that the icicles otherwise mask.

Hey Kyle,

These both look really nice! I love those icicles. Do you have a shot like #1, but maybe horizontal and without the water at the bottom? I like that blue contrast of the sky with the icicles, but my eyes are getting a bit distracted by the water at the bottom.

Lovely shots, Kyle. The frozen falls up in the Jasper-Banff highway are gorgeous in winter and somehow the sunshine and blue sky that you often get in winter helps to make it look even colder!

Thank you Alan - I have to agree!

Thanks Jim. I went back and looked and it turns out I don't. It was a somewhat challenging morning (cold), my family had already given up and gone back to the car and I had been waiting for a couple having a snack in the middle of the frame to move out of the way - so I didn't manage to do what I normally do and try a few comps. Oh well.

2nd one's my favorite, too.
Thank you Cetywa

Brr. Another vote for the second image, very nice.
Thanks a lot Ben

they are both fantastic. I actually like the first one better, but with the blue of the sky cropped out.
I hadn't thought of that, but it definitely adds some more power to the ice. Thanks!

Doesn't look half as cold as it felt :)

Kyle, both very nice. I agree with Alan about the water movement in the 2nd it adds a very dynamic element to the scene.

That is an interesting waterfall. Does the water spill out behind the ice or over the top of it?

Thanks a lot Dean - I'm sure that's a big part of why most people seem to prefer it. The scale of the 1st image isn't clear (one reason why I included the trees at the top) - it is much more impressive in person than in the photo. I guess I need to get that out of my head!

It amazes me that the water keeps flowing at all (geothermal activity sure helps)! It is flowing behind the ice.
