This bison calf’s mother was killed by wolves. The mother was forced into the Yellowstone River where she succumbed to hypothermia and was then eaten. A well-documented and photographed event that occurred a week earlier.
This orphaned and injured calf was born months later than the rest of the claves and faced a harsh winter even with a healthy mother. Without a mother, she is doomed. The following photos show an angry bison cow ruthlessly chasing the calf away from the herd.
In the first three photos, the cow demonstrates her anger and strength before attacking the calf.
At the time, I knew she was angry. Even though we were 30 yards away I retreated to the car.
When the tail curls, look out.
The calf is covered with snow because the mad cow has pummeled her. The cow used her face, horns, and body weight to pummel the calf. When the cow backs off the calf flees only to be pummeled again.
The calf escapes this final chase but she is no longer near the herd
