The critique forum is a good place to perfect your images. Critique can include subject, camera technique and post processing. You may want to get your image as good as possible before having it printed or before display at a presentation venue such as the landscape forum for example.

Embedding unprocessed images in a post:

If you want to get help on post processing you can post unprocessed images for others to download and process and crop. These are often referred to as SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera). Of course we cannot include full size raw images here, so we have a substitute. An up to 3000 wide JPG can be uploaded to a special critique gallery. These larger files cannot be uploaded to other galleries, or directly embedded in a post, so you must follow the specific steps outlined below.

Preparation of the image for uploading.

1. Open the RAW image.

2. You can use lens corrections if you wish, but do not make any other adjustments to the raw file, and do not sharpen or use noise reduction.

3. When open, resize to 3000 pixels in the longest direction.

4. Set the mode to 8 bit.

5. Convert to profile sRGB.

6. Save as a jpg file.

Uploading to the Critique gallery.

Click gallery just below the Focal World logo. Then find "add media" in the bar below it. A window opens which has two choices.

1. Site category
2. Album.

Choose site category and under choose category, select "critique downloads"

Add the new image file from your hard drive. This is the only way to download 3000 wide images.

Embed the SOOC image in a post.

Once the image is on the critique gallery, you can then insert it into the post by selecting the "icon that looks like a camera" it will say "media gallery embed" All of your media will be displayed, you must browse to the image you want to embed and select it. As soon as you select it, a text string appears in the reply window with the address of this Image. You are done.

You can embed several images in the gallery and later in the post. For example if you have three different exposures, you can make SOOC versions of each and include them. Other forum members can then download these images and blend them and process them and show you the results in a reply post.
