Guard Bird

Another Anna's hummingbird guarding a feeder right outside our kitchen. My wife stumbled across a hummingbird swing years ago and I chuckled at the notion that hummingbirds would actually perch on it. Turns out to be the perfect spot for a territorial Anna's hummer that wants to chase off other hummers that might have designs on the contents of the feeder. The snow piles are from the past 3 days - somewhere between 12-14". This is the most snow on the ground since 2008 for this area.

I don't shoot these feeders a lot since they were placed mostly for watching entertainment and are in horrible locations for getting light on the front of the birds.

For the record the female Anna's hummer that has been holding her vigil over the feeder outside of my office is still there and I have watched her chase off numerous intruders over the past few days.

How funny it’s on the swing. That sure is a lot of snow!

You should take some tips from Eric and see if you can’t get one of the feeders in a spot with a non descript background.

Happily this amount of snow doesn't happen often - it's been a dozen years since the last time we got this much.

Our backyard is full of various kinds of feeders but I don't really have anything set up for a place to shoot from at all.

Looks like a great day for a BBQ.

I will have that ready to use again by tomorrow night

I am surprised you didn’t pull out your long lens to get a closer look at the hummer.

Thanks - I kept the shot simple since the strong backlighting obliterates any real details of the hummer. I have tried shooting hummers perched there with a long lens but typically get good silhouettes instead of portraits.

Nice setting for a hummer. Lots of protection. This has been the most unusual winter in a while and it is not over yet.
