Got Groceries?

Slight shift of gears today with a set of the general store in Bodie California. The town is a state park that describes itself as a town in "an arrested state of decay". To the extent you can really stop time from doing what it does to everything else they have done a pretty good job of curating what's left of the place as a neat place to wander with a camera. In this case I found myself wishing the window glass was a bit cleaner and wanting a small black umbrella like lens hood to kill the reflections but did manage to get some interior shots in with windows that had favorable lighting conditions.

This is the general store interior with some fun contents to view/shoot.

A few pharmaceuticals:

A more general view of the store interior.

I will give credit to the folks who set up the displays here with respect to the ambience of room. While everything looks as if no one has walked into this room for many years there is a not so subtle hint this isn't exactly the case - I cropped out the fire alarm on the ceiling at the top of the frame. There are no ladder marks or footprints on the floor from that installation task. One of the departments I provided computer support for at the University of Utah was the Museum of Natural History and I have seen the curators build displays like this. They know how to fake the dust.

C&C always welcome.

Love it. A shame you can’t browse inside, it’s fun to read all the signs and labels.
Sadly given the number of people who visit this site it's unlikely there would be anything left on those shelves if we were allowed inside. I'm glad they preserved it so I got to see the place like this.

Sad but true, and being that this is California; if people were allowed inside everything that was nailed down would be covered in graffiti.

Very nice collection Alan! It's definitely fun to peek into the various windows there, and learning to shoot through the windows without reflections is almost an art form to itself.

I actually got far better images from my iPhone than I did with my DSLR. Much easier to avoid the reflections. These were all DSLR shots but the number of unusable DSLR shots was far higher than I am used to seeing at the end of the day.

I was thinking about some kind of reverse umbrella like black lens hood maybe about a foot across at the opening might eliminate the reflections. Can't say that I have ever seen something like that....
