Golden Blue Moon

There's always been a touch of magic surrounding the "blue moon."

Contrary to its name, the term doesn't refer to the moon turning a shade of blue. Instead, it's the whimsical phrase we use when two full moons grace our skies in a single month.

Such a captivating event only happens every two to three years. Tonight, in San Jose, I witnessed a mesmerizing sight: the moon, at 98% fullness, rising majestically behind the Lick Observatory in Santa Clara.

And can you believe our good fortune? Owing to this year's serene fire season (fingers firmly crossed it remains so), the moonlight was particularly radiant.

Coupled with the light purple hue of the evening sky, it was truly an evening to remember!

Technically speaking, tomorrow is the true blue moon night, but the temperature is going up another 10 degrees, and the atmospheric airflow would kill any pictures, I went out early to get the shot.

This picture was taken from 9.93 miles away, where the Lick Observatory aligns with the moon rising.

Hey Oliver,

I saw the moon tonight and thought about capturing it because it looked pretty good, but I ended up not. So I am glad you did. You picked a really great spot too. I need something like this as I really like what you got.

I am thinking on going down to San Diego and using it's city skyline to go along with the moon tomorrow, well today now since it's 1am.
