Ghost Forest

Using a more high-key approach here than I usually do, allowed me to have more fun with this open grove of oaks. Classic central California coastal area, with scattered oaks on grassy endlessly rolling hills. This is somewhere near Caliente, CA on the road to Bodfish (near Lake Isabella).

Gives it kind of a mysterious feel. The stark look to the tree in front is eye catching and keeps my attention.

Nice interpretation.

I like what you've got going here Jeffrey. The hillside background sets the mood with it's ethereal atmosphere. What about increasing the contrast around the foreground oak, thus separating it from the background a bit more?

Hey Jeffrey,

Very nice work here. The high key look is certainly different but I think it works. And good job on finding the composition. I drive that area periodically and I am always keeping an eye out for shots with the trees and the hills. Those shots are actually not easily come by.

Zeph, I thought of that and tried it in various ways. In images like these, as well as foggy and soft light images, just the slightest increase in contrast changes the mood dramatically. In fact, decreasing contrast and lowering clarity often add to this type of approach.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Hi Jeffrey,

The difference between the bottom of the tree being grounded and shadowed while letting the leaves at the top completely blend into the background is a very nice touch.
