Interesting that the Russians left California just before the gold rush (not enough furs to be profitable for trade.) Then left Alaska before the gold rush there. It might have been a different world had they stayed. This photo is a contrast as the cannons are in front of the church.

Their wood construction techniques are quite unique and distinctive. I like the springtime green look in this scene.

The light, the great construction and the contrast bewteen old wood, spring greens and rusty iron are wonderful.

I've driven by there many times, including getting a ticket for making an illegal pass in front of the entrance! I've never stopped though. These came out really nice, I'm going to have to make the effort. The green grass sure helps.

Hey Roger, this a great piece of history. And that is funny about the timing like you pointed out.

Thanks for making great use of the Historical Forum, it's turning into a great forum for shots like this one.

The contrast between the cannons and the church is a striking one indeed.
