Feather Vase

I obtained this piece of log while visiting my daughter in Slocan B.C. The branches come out of the trunk in a relatively even manner about every 14 - 18 inches up the trunk. I cut this piece so the knots of the branches would be at the widest part of the vase with the intent to carve feathers and include the knot as part of the feather feature. Kind of reminded me of the colouring of a peacock feather. The feathers are painted with Golden acrylic interference colours.
The vase is hollowed out through a hole in the top and the base is carved to allow the vase to stand on the feather quills.

This piece is 3 3/4" in dia. and 7" tall.
Two views show different sides of the same piece.

A very unique piece and nicely worked. I like how you highlighted the knots in the feather patterns.

So the whole piece is carved and not turned or did you get the basic shape down on the lathe and then finish with carving?

Thanks Alan for your ongoing support and comments. I did turn it to shape then hollow turned it with a wall thickness of about 1/4 inch. Then drew the feathers on and carved the wood away to leave the feathers higher than the background. Then I added the texture on the background with a small carving tool.

Nice, Trent. I like the choice of paint and colors on this piece. How many hours did you spend on this? Looks like a very long time!

A unique piece of art! I especially like the way you blended the tones of the blues. Fine carving is another skill I never learned (or even attempted)!
