Fall in an Alder Grove

Alders don't offer much of anything for fall colors but their moss covered white trunks make a nice addition to the colors that are often found in the understory vegetation. A scene from late October in the Siuslaw National Forest.

Thanks Trent - big time yes on the moisture. Long term annual precipitation is in the 90-100" range.

Thanks Beth - the trees in this area get smothered with the moss and ferns growing out of the moss on the tree trunks is common and visible in this scene.

Thanks Jim - the catch to fall colors up here is that you don't look for them from wide vistas (which we don't have anyway) but in places that have been disturbed by logging, fire, road cuts, or landslides. The trees that give us colors are the first to colonize the disturbance and the conifers take over later.
