Crusader Castle at Kerak

The crusader castle ruins in Petra were rather pathetic compared to what got built farther north at the site of Kerak. Construction of this castle began in 1140AD. Various crusader leaders commanded the post until it was captured by Saladin in 1189. This was one of the largest crusader castles in the area known as the Levant and was originally called Crac des Moabites.

From the outside of the castle the walls offer few targets for anyone trying to assault the inhabitants.

The slits are portals for the archers inside.

From the inside you can see that the archer's stations have an angled wall that allows them to cover a wide area below the wall. The archer's stations weren't tall and they probably had to kneel to shoot.

The fort had a commanding view of the countryside from the ramparts:

Finally a shot I took just because the scene looked nice instead of something I was trying to document:

C&C always welcome.

Very cool Alan. What an imposing view they had. It's pretty cool that it still exists today.
Many parts of the castle have collapsed at this point but these hills are the eastern side of the Rift Valley as it extends north from Africa. It's almost a wonder that any unreinforced masonry structures are still upright after this long in that area. They usually get a magnitude 6+ quake every 2-300 years.

The structures are impressive but I can’t get over the thought of just how difficult life must’ve been. Excellent documentary images... Mike
