Cloud ballet

After a week of experimenting with various methods for shooting R5 time lapse videos, I found that using aperture priority with auto iso works best. This video was shot using this mode.

Both manual and shutter priority modes run out of freedom to increase exposure too soon and drive ISO too high. I have auto iso movie mode limited to 3200. I also have high iso NR set to high.

Using aperture priority and starting at f5.6 typically sets the start of sunset shutter somewhere around 1/640 and iso at 100. The default slowest shutter in movie mode is 1/30, but this can be changed to 1/8. This gives the video lots of room for exposure adjustments before the iso needs to be above 3200. I would like to set iso shutoff to 2000, but the cut offs are 1600 followed by 3200. I figure I can always cut off the last part of the video if it has too much noise.

In this case I did not cut any video. In Photoshop I used the camera raw filter to add about 7% nr and 7% color noise.

Looks much better in 4K, right now Youtube is only showing 1080p

To me this is more about the play of light on the mountains than the clouds. You had a great sunset as well. Pretty smooth time lapse. Nicely done.

Hey Ben, I finally got to watch this. It's one I know I didn't want to watch on my phone but wanted to wait until I could watch it on a monitor.

Awesome work here, and I like the play of light and color and then light and then back to color.

My thought with being Aperture Priority is that with the Shutter speed adjusting and slowing down as it gets darker that the speed in which the clouds move in the timelapse would also slow down. But, it looked fine to me. I sure didn't notice that. So at least for doing the clouds like this, I think you found a winning combination for you.

Looked quite nice in HD - very nice transitions through the light and colors. A pleasure to watch.
Thanks Alan, glad you like it.

Good point Jameel, maybe I should have named it color ballet.

Jim, I think the 2 second intervals are constant in the R5. That is the shutter speed does not add to the interval. The slowest is 1/8 second which is still a fraction of 2 seconds. Remember, 1 second intervals are not an option. So the shutter speed may cause motion blur as it gets slower, but 1/8 second on clouds is nothing.
