Clearing Storm

This is a wider view from Tunnel View, still having some of the rocks obscured to varying degrees but not as minimalistic of a view as my previous thread "Curtains". One thing that is interesting is the WB when shooting clearing storms in Yosemite Valley. Quite often the area back by Half Dome and Clouds Rest will turn very cool, the foreground trees will be cool since they are in shadow, but not as cool as that pocket of light by Half Dome, and then the clouds will be more on a warmer spectrum. I didn't isolate and change any of the WB in this, and visually, especially the pocket of very cool blue by Half Dome is very noticeable visually when standing there.

Anyway, the sun is now up enough to have direct light in the scene in areas.

All comments are welcome :)

It is curious to see the varied white balance in both the trees and the clouds. This is a beautiful scene with the fresh snow on the trees and the low clouds over the valley.

Now this is what I wanted to see in the other one. Very very nice. The snow covers up a lot of dead trees in this view.

Thanks Alan, the first time I noticed that some years ago I thought it was like some super rare occurrence and I was able to get a photograph that was one of a kind and only I had it.... of course I come to find out, it's not all that uncommon, it's a result of the way the valley is shaped and how the clouds often seem to bottleneck with El Capitan on one side and Bridalveil with Cathedral rocks on the right.

Thanks Ben. This clearing storm went on for several hours, so I do have a wide variety of photos I was able to capture. The window in this shot probably only lasted 45 secs to 1 min. The clouds were pretty fast moving, and of course later in hindsight I realized I should have maybe stacked on some ND filters and tried to get a 5 or 10 min exposure capturing the cloud movement.

That would be cool.

Love the peekaboo aspect of this timeless tunnel view image, Jim. I hear you got a good storm there Monday or Tuesday. I hope it was productive for you. I just returned from four nights of camping in snow and witnessing a three day snow and light event there. Will post some soon,

Thanks so much Jeffrey! I kept watching the webcams so I know you got a lot of snow up there. It sounds like you had a nice clearing storm look on Saturday night? I look forward to seeing what you were able to capture there.

Never having been there I’m always amazed at the varied, unique scenes from this same vantage point. Good shot.
