Chasing the Sunset in Arches NP

It was a complete trip to ride through Arches National Park on a motorcycle. The entrance to the park, with steep switchbacks overlooking Moab, sparked conversation over the helmet intercom about the most visually appealing national park entrances in America. There was some serious cloud drama overhead this afternoon and evening, and we dealt with some precipitation.

This was my second visit to the park and this time I spent most of my time around Turret Arch and the Windows. I felt something while up close to Turret, but not like Double Arch or Delicate Arch. The Windows were bigger than I thought they were.

During the final few minutes before sunset, I left my friends to go to Balanced Rock. In an effort to chase sunset colors, I hopped on the bike and tore around those curves leading to Balanced Rock entirely too fast. I parked, ran up the trail, and then was greeted with this glowing red color on Balanced Rock which lasted for maybe a minute. The clouds overhead never lit up how I hoped.

Standing on the base of Balanced Rock after the sun officially set, I noticed some color over the La Sal mountains and realized this was the spot to be just a few minutes earlier when the peaks were glowing. But, this view was fine too. I walked back to the parking lot a little salty about not being in the right spot at the right time, and found my friends waiting for me. We rode back to Moab for dinner and soon I felt myself smile again.

Hey Michael,

I enjoyed following along with you. Arches is such a cool place, and I can see you wanting to spend time by the Windows and Turret Arch. Chasing the light in Arches on a motorcycle must be so fun as there are very few straight sections of road. Almost all of the roads curve back and forth.

Nice photo journal of your road adventures. Glad you are sharing the visual treats. The light you got on Balanced Rock is excellent for bringing out the colors of the sandstone.
