Castle Menzies, Perthshire, Scotland

The light was doing me any favours but the recently renovated 16thC castle was looking pristine. Peak Autumn colours still a long way off. Menzies is another Scottish name that is pronounced very differently from what the spelling would suggest; (Ming is) with the stress on the first syllable and a soft s. Ken

Beautiful old castle and the hints of autumn colors behind makes a really nice scene. The castle looks like its in fairly good condition in spite of its age although I'd hate to see the winter heating bills :)

Alan the castle was bought, as a ruin, by Clan Menzies in 1957 for $700. They raised money and it was fully restored by 1997, the money spent is not disclosed. The West wing, on the left was Victorian and the original 16thC part on the right. There was a North wing but it was demolished as it was too far gone. As you say trying to heat this place must be a nightmare as I am sure that the restoration would not have included dry lining and insulating the walls. It is available to hire as a wedding venue if you have a lot of money to burn and have a several hundred guests. Ken

Wow Ken! Love this! And to think it was bought for only $700. That's mind blowing!

The restoration looks good from here. Can you tour inside it?
