One of my favorite areas near the mouth of the Columbia - I have spent more than a few nights at the campground out there and most of the time there was at least some fog/mist near the headlands. I like your lighthouse shot and trail shots.

If not mistaken, this is where Lewis and Clark spent the winter when they arrived at the coast and had a miserable winter.

Actually they were just on the east side of the Meglar Bridge in a small cove they named the Dismal Nitch. The small cove gave them a slight bit of shelter from the storms but the storms pretty much pinned them down for about a week. They moved over to what is now the Oregon side of the Columbia and built Fort Clatsop during a break in the winter storms.
Nice set. The fog adds a dimension - esp. to the first image with the lighthouse. No disappointment for sure.

where did they come up with these names? cape disappointment and dismal niche. i half expect to find a meh mountain nearby. thanks for the history, i remember seeing fort clatsop as i was driving around the lewes and clark np area.

Dismal Nitch was just about the mood they were in by the time Lewis and Clark neared the mouth of the Columbia River. Fall and winter storms in that area can be a bit on the nasty side and they got clobbered just as they could finally see the Pacific. They couldn't proceed with the hard rains and wind and took shelter in what little cover they could find and named the place The Dismal Nitch. The notes from the expedition had a lot of unique spellings of places and things and the spelling of any given word often changed from day to day.
Cape Disappointment was named by a British fur trader named John Meares in 1788.
