Bryce Before Dawn

Yesterday was a rainy day in the Pacific NW so I was digging around my image archive playing with old captures that might be workable with DxO PureRAW3. One I decided to try was a shot from Bryce Canyon taken with a Canon 5D MkII (never known for good night photography) well before dawn. I didn't have much experience with night photography in the first place so lots of totally black frames and streaky stars but this one held at least a little promise. This is showing a lot more light than was actually present with a 7 second expose @F/5.6 with ISO100.

Seems a little darker as a jpeg than what I was editing but I did need a flashlight for the camera settings. Live View on those old cameras didn't work with this kind of light. I had this mental image of lots of stars above Bryce and didn't get any images that resembled that fantasy

Turned out pretty nice given where you started from. Would you say PureRAW v3 is worth the upgrade over v2.

Thanks - I think so. DxO has added a new AI module to enhance their sharpening and noise reduction beyond the optical corrections and noise reduction they had in v2. Deep shadows were never very recoverable with older cameras like the 5DMkII and this seems to go a lot farther than v2 did. This image can be made a lot brighter than what I did here but I tried to hold that back to be more realistic with the light that was (or mostly wasn't) when I shot this back in April 2009.

Thanks Trent - it's fun being able to go play with my old captures with the new digital toys. The software at the time really wasn't able to take advantage of the information the pixels contained in the RAW output of our cameras. Turns out we actually were taking better photographs than we thought at the time.

Thanks it seemed a little brighter on my screen but this is still more light on the canyon than I could standing there.
