Black Canyon Sunset

This is from this last year, from the North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. It makes me want to get a fisheye so that I can get wide enough to get the canyon and some decent amount of sky in 1 shot. :)

This is one shot, but I sure wished I had more of the sky in the image.

I can easily see why you wanted more sky - that sunset begs for more space in your image :) Clouds aside however this view of the canyon and the river with this light is really nice.

Thanks Alan! During the day isn't as bad as I could have raised the composition for an additional shot for a pano. But I was setting up for some night time Milky Way images, and since I do timelapses from them, moving the camera to reposition it is not an option. On this particular night, I was shooting it from here, but after an hour or so switched to vertical. Which could get it all in for a photograph, but for timelapses, horizontal video's play much better then vertical.

Really nice view Jim. As to going wide, have you thought of stitching. Fish eye has its applications, for my eye landscape isn't one of them.

Thanks Jameel, glad you liked it. The problem with a pano is that won’t work at night doing Timelapses. So my fisheye idea was more of a joke and wishful thinking.

Jim, stunning sunset, love it.

I have used a fisheye lens for quite a while, while the aspect is great, I find it compressing the elements too much. Nowadays I would use pano ball head to take multiple of shots, in the post-process it's easy to stitch all the shots together to create an ultra-wide photo.

Thanks so much Oliver! That would be my fear for the fisheye, that it would just compress things too much. If only someone would make an 11-24mm for Nikon, it's too bad only Canon has that cool toy!
