1. Unexpected snow on 5th January and I went out for a walk with camera. This is about 2 miles from home and I like the simplicity and the 2 couples split into men ahead with dog and the 2 women deep in conversation bringing up the rear.
2. River Brathay, Lake District 22nd Jan. The forecast of fog got me out of bed long before dawn to drive down to this location 60 miles away. I was hoping for low lying fog but I found low clouds down onto the water's surface. I waited in freezing conditions for 2 hours for the sun to finally break through and give me a couple of minutes of usable light.
3. Brough Castle 26th May. This year has seen very unusual weather, this day saw the first clouds and light rain in 7 weeks. We even declared a drought area. Usually it rains on 4 days every week, it has made up for it now with days of heavy rain. Brough Castle in Cumbria is one of a chain of Castles across the North of England built to discourage the Scots from invading, it didn't stop them.
I stood in light rain waiting and watching for the light to bathe the castle in perfect light.
4. Cumbrian countryside 7th July, phone shot. I have lived here for more than 30 years and this was the first time that I noticed that this was an almost perfect representation of rural North of England. This was taken on my normal 14 mile bicycle ride around the rural lanes and shows the view towards the Lake District hills.
5. Early morning 13th September Sassolungo. The Dolomites have been on my bucket list for a long time and this was the year while my knees still allow me to slowly plod up hills.
6. 17th September Alpe di Siusi with Sassolungo. My trip to the Dolomites coincided with a period of mostly blue skies and no mist, ah well a good reason to return. This was my third early morning visit hoping for mist and a decent sunrise.
7. 17th September Passo Giau was about 10 miles from my hotel and it was easy to wait for sunset and get back for dinner. This was the only evening with any clouds. If you look very carefully you may spot 2 hotels high up on the mountain.
8. 19th September early morning at Passo Giau but looking at Colle Santa Lucia. I wish that I had spotted this composition a few minutes earlier when the pool of light was smaller but since this is a 200mm shot I was lucky to see it at all. Colle Santa Lucia is one of the most photographed locations in the Dolomites but not from here. I will post a more usual image later.
9. 20th September driving back to Milan. Monte Averau from the side of the road. After all of my planning about what to shoot and arriving pre-dawn this was a mid morning grab shot from the side of the road and my favourite image from the trip.
10. 17th October Loch Droma, Highland Scotland. I have passed this small Loch countless times and always thought that there was a shot to be had. This was a misty morning as I was travelling across Scotland to photograph the West coast. I just waited for the light and got lucky with the reflection.
