Best of 2024

Like last year, this will be a sort of photo journal of where I traveled through the year. It’s quite difficult to narrow down the thousands of shots I’ve taken to just 10. But these sum up my year nicely.

No. 1 - Death Valley National Park got some moisture in the beginning of 2024 and several temporary lakes, like this one in Panamint Valley, popped up. These attracted visitors from all over the world. It was a trip to see vehicles hauling kayaks while driving through the park. The shot below did not take a lot of effort to get; I just pulled over to the side of State Route 190, crouched a bit, and pressed the button. Fast forward to today, and this image won a contest hosted by Inyo County and is now the cover of their 2025 calendar.

No. 2 - After the lakes dried up in DVNP, flowers replaced them. This shot is from the other shoulder of SR 190, facing Telescope Peak.

No. 3 - More flowers from the Mojave Desert, this time from the Trona Pinnacles. I hadn't seen flowers here before.

No. 4 - I properly visited Canyonlands NP for the first time in the middle of a 10-day, 2400 mile motorcycle trip. Photos don’t do this place justice.

No. 5 - The hanging gardens in Page, AZ. This was also a part of the motorcycle trip. I had myself a sort of spiritual experience in this location, one that I’ll always remember.

No. 6 - The hike to Thousand Island Lake was my final big day hike of the summer. Due to taking a wrong turn, I ended up walking 19.5 miles.

No. 7 - I saw Moonlight Falls for myself for the first time in the high country just west of Bishop. This was another strenuous day hike.

No. 8 - During a random drive to Lone Pine to look at a motorcycle for sale, I stumbled upon a space ship in the Alabama Hills.

No. 9 - I visited Massachusetts for the first time with a trip to Provincetown and Boston. The Atlantic Ocean felt wonderful. I got sick in the middle of the trip though.

No. 10 - I arrived in Taiwan on December 28, making this my first visit to Asia and first trip abroad since 2017. This shot is of Sun Moon Lake at dawn. I returned a few days ago and have since then become sick. Worth it!

Quite an eventful year with a wide range of photo opportunities. The images of a wet DVNP are highly unusual compared to most anything I have ever witnessed at that park and thought of seeing people packing their kayaks in is just nuts. Glad your shot of the temporary lake won a place on the Inyo calendar - beautiful reflections. Beautiful desert flowers in shots #2 and #3. The other standout for my eyes is #9 with the derelict pilings in Massachusetts.

Nice work on all of these.

Hey Michael, picking just 10 is always very difficult, but I think a good practice for us to work our eyes on our own photos to narrow down the best of the best.

You had some really great trips this year. I really like #1 with the water in Badwater Basin. Congrats on getting that in the calendar. I was there twice to see the water, but I didn't see those tile like patterns under the water like you captured. That's really special.

#3 in Trona is really cool with the flowers. It's a favorite place of mine that I try to get to every year to capture the Milky Way from there. I have seen flowers there before, but not as many as you captured.

And just a comment on #7, I have backpacked into Thousand Island Lake. It's a really fun and cool location. I have been there early in the season when there is still small islands of ice floating in the water. And having hiked there, I know the trails and they way they split, one can easily get off on the wrong trail, or not turn at the right junction as they aren't marked very clearly. I had to make sure I really followed my map the whole way.
