Benson Beach

Benson Beach is the primary beach alongside of Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington. This is a tasty sunset that popped up one evening I was staying at the park campground so I wandered over to the beach to catch a bit of the colors just before the dreaded marine layer snuffed it all out.

Very nice Alan. Have you ever noticed how long some pieces of driftwood can last at a given place? This one is too close to water to stay there long, but I have seen some pieces for mayb3 30 years at Yachats. They get nudged around from time to time. But they are always there like old friends.

I knew about quite a few driftwood piles like that along the Oregon coastline - until December of 2015. There was a series of winter storms that hit back to back for almost 2 weeks and almost every driftwood pile I knew of got broken apart. Not just moved around a little - flat out redistributed in some cases for miles. I was out at the coast at the time thinking I could watch the weather info and move to the edge of the passing storms in search of sunsets. As it turned out there were no edges within driving range within the 10 days I was out at the coast. This is an image of Thor's Well - at low tide on the day the had the highest swells. Buoy data was showing 35' swells offshore.

I have some video of some of those driftwood piles getting slammed around and scattered and it's almost frightening to see how insignificant those large logs seem when the Pacific gets this riled up.
