While hiking a few weeks ago in SW Colorado and exploring a new trail with Alisa, we came across these moose in the trail. While hiking up the trail we saw just one and it dashed off into the forest as soon as I walked around a bend in the trail and it saw us. There wasn't even time to lift the camera up and take a photo. But on the way back down, as we got closer to the area where that moose was, we saw a couple stopped in the trail, and sure enough about a 100 feet or so beyond them was some moose.
So the initial moose had some friends! It ended up being 2 males and 2 females and they were browsing through the trees and bushes but also walking out in the trail. Other people starting piling up with this road block, on both the near and far side of the trail. There was maybe 8 people. 1 lady that was on the far side from us, that was going up the trail and circled through the forest to get around them and met with us, and then she took off up the trail. I had spent about 30 minutes at this point and had a ton of moose photos, so with Alisa, we headed around through the side of the forest the lady had taken, going in a circular route to keep distance from the moose.
As we got back up on the far side of the trail, we could take more photos from this other angle. I then noticed a group of 4 people attempting to do the same thing that we had done, only instead of making a circle, they were angling away. With the way the land was with some hills in that area, had they kept at that angle, they would have ended up miles from the parking area (which wasn't that far away). So I stopped photographing, I could see them through the trees about a 100 yards away at this point, so I walked back down the way we had come, and called out to them. They then started to come towards me as I told them they were going the wrong way. That side of the trail, was lower then where the trail was and I was standing. They were struggling a bit in trying to find a route though the marshy, forested area, so I walked down further and I could see where they needed to walk to get through the forest and marsh, and then I started calling directions out to the lead person and then helped the others to find their way. Finally they made their way to me and I led the way back up to the trail.
So a bit of excitement, perhaps a few hours saved for these people who were heading off to get lost, and then back to taking a few more photos of the moose's before heading back to the trucks to do some 4x4 trail driving in search of wildflowers.
This is one image, I will work on a few more later.
