I was at Bolsa Chica Wildlife Preserve shooting birds and testing out different things with the new Tamron 150-600mm lens. I did shoot lot's of nameless birds. I had gotten there late in the afternoon so there wasn't much time before the sun was setting towards the horizon. As I looked over to the Bolsa Chica State Beach area I spotted this bonfire going with the cargo ships waiting for Long Beach in the background. So for a bit, my focus switched from photographing the birds (which is was starting to get too dark for anyway) over to shooting the sunset and also incorporating what felt like an Armageddon scene.

These people are probably a 1/4 to 1/2 mile away, but the lens pulled them in nicely. I purposely shot to get the cargo shot out of focus as I just wanted it looming in the background. I could have posted this I think in several different forums here, not sure it has distinctly defined elements in it, my first thought was Street Photography, except there really is no street here! It's at the beach which mean landscape, but in the end the man made elements made me choose the City forum. And for our beaches here in SoCal we are definitely in the city. There is a Jack in the Box just about a half mile north of where I am shooting.

All comments are welcome.

Interesting to watch as you gradually incorporate this lens into your shooting habits. Now just drag it along for a landscape shoot and my guess is you will start to see new scenes within the formerly wide angle only views :)

Thanks Alan. As a landscaper at heart, I will see and shoot landscapes with whatever lens I am using. :)

I used to always shoot with 2 camera bodies on 2 tripods. An ultra Wide and a long lens. I had stopped that habit the day a few years ago when I was shooting at Newport Beach and a wave came in (and it wasn't even a big wave) but it knocked over my D700 (my love and joy) into the ocean and I lost it. If I had just been shooting with one camera and lens, that wouldn't have happened. So that was the point where I shot more wide angle as it's less convenient to switch lenses. But if you look through my stuff, I have a 70-300mm that I really like and it's not uncommon for me to switch to that while out shooting. It's just the main shots I seem to post the most are my wide angle.

You will see more long landscapes thrown in now I am sure since I am using the Tamron 150-600mm a lot right now. First to make sure it's a good copy, and then also those lenses are beasts of lens so to learn the best way to use it by practicing. They are like holding and using a bazooka. it's 4 times as heavy and long then my 70-300mm. So I have a lot to learn with using it. Different techniques, or different ways to shoot with it. And third, I got the Tamron mainly because I want to help build up both the Astro and Wildlife forums with more photos, so I bought this lens to shoot those types of shots just for that. We have plenty of people posting landscapes, so I want to help fill in the lesser used forums to help them be a draw to help pull in more new members to help the forum grow.

I am still primarily using it hand held, though I will use the tripod at times in the future.
