Another Corona Del Mar

Hey Ryan,

I like the foundation of this shot, you have good waves, some cool shapes in the clouds. But it feels too dark to me, and that magenta in the sky looks a bit odd.

This is just with about 40% shadow recovery, the sky is perhaps a bit too bright, but I wanted to go this bright with it to see the detail in the clouds and rocks, and to also try to figure out that magenta cast in it. Because the sky is still blue, so it's odd that so much else went so heavy magenta. How much past sunset did you shoot this?

I like both versions, color cast aside. The dark liik has a lot of mystery, Jims version has a more traditional look. Did you use a ND grad? I had a lot of color cast issues when I used Lee ND grads and also some with a Singh Ray.

I used a Hitech-Format Reverse ND Grad, (resin). It does add a little magenta cast as you can see in the SooC image I attached.

Non-landscaper opinion:

I'd like to see you meet more in the middle of your OP and Jim's rework.

I definitely like mood conveyed by the darker look, but it's a bit TOO dark and a little heavy-handed with contrast/sat.

Once tweaked I think this will be a very nice image.

Cheers!

It looks like in your SOOC that you had exposed for the bright area along the horizon which is going to underexpose everything else by 2 or 3 stops as seen in it.

There are a lot of ways to interpret this scene. While going darker to great a mysterious mood is good sometimes, for me there is just such cool detail in the clouds I hate to see it being lost by going too dark.

Here is a quick edit from your SOOC.

I like first from it that there is no magenta/red in the rocks. So even if you push the red up in the clouds, use a layer mask and isolate it from the water/rocks.

Yeah...I'd agree with you. I pushed to see what might be too much. Looking at it the next day, yeah, too much unnatural color in the sky and a bit too dark.

Hey Ryan,

It does happen to us all. One of these days I am going to start a thread in the Sit and Chat forum called "What was I thinking?" just to post photos we had processed and then looked at the next day and thought... what was I thinking?... I have this one from HB that I have never gone back to reprocess, I have left it in all of its over the top glory...
