I am pretty sure that is a screech owl, Pepper. You have done an excellent job of capturing him or her. Isn't it amazing how well they blend into the environment. If he was in a tree instead of a nesting box he would be almost impossible to see.

thanks alan. it did manage to blend into the wood, that's actually how i spotted it. i know there's supposed to be a black hole somewhere on the side of that box.I think you pegged it - sleepy owl

thanks ben. you're right, how do they fit? they're a bit like winged cats in that regard.
thanks douglas. you've saved me from having to find that old copy of sibley's that i have somewhere in the house. if he were in the tree i would have missed him completely, their ability to blend in to wood is pretty sweet.

Wonderful capture Pepper.it's an owl with ears. figured that's important since everything seems to be a short eared or long eared owl. not sure why it's can't just be a sleepy owl or a brown owl, but it's definitely an eared owl.
