A croft... I'm not sure if it's the right word, but anyways..
Here in Finland we call(ed) those as "torppa". They were build in a landowners land with their permission. An payment, the people living in those crofts worked for the landowners
Well, that's a very simplified version

That building is probably about a hundred years old. And most likely, will be demolished within the next few years.
