A Ruinous State

After hauling my dog through a slot canyon on the last trip, I suppose it was only just that this time, she trotted merrily through the thickets of brambles, grasses and saplings leaving me to crawl on my forearms and knees, head down so I didn't poke my eyes with the numerous branches and twigs pointed in my direction. I hadn't been to Arch Canyon in about a decade, and back then the grasses were shoulder to head high. The canyon flash flooded in 2013, which, considering how wide it is, is pretty impressive. Getting to these ruins back then was a bit of a chore, but not anywhere nearly as difficult as in 2022: I couldn't reach the bottom of the seed heads of the grasses. The only thing that was easier is that the creek bed was mostly dry instead of wading through a marsh.

How far down the canyon is this from Lewis Lodge? For a moment when I first saw the image I thought this might be another shot from when we visited there a few years back.

Monika, the color version works for me, the patterns on the rock contrast against the "south-western red" nicely to draw my eyes to the ruins under the boulder.

Definitely the color for me Monika. The B&W for some reason gives it more of a documentary feel. But the color helps to bring it to life as if there were still living people there.

What a crazy hike to get there! At least the creek bed was dry. How many miles in was it?

Supposedly, one can get to Lewis Lodge from the 2nd side canyon off of Arch. (Tried once, but were in the 1st side canyon). You & I may have been looking down into Arch. This is reached from UT 95 just west of the Comb. The side road (CR205) goes a little over 2 miles to the trailhead.

Arch Canyon Ruin is only 1/4 mile from the trailhead & this is in the next curve, not sure how far. At least the elbows & knees part was short and dry.....

I like both of these images, Monika. I especially like the tonal range in the B&W. You're certainly one of the most tenacious people I have ever met. I am pretty sure I wouldn't have done that although at my age I am beginning to become overly cautious.
