These are such massive birds compared to the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers that we see often. I am visiting Winnipeg, Manitoba where my family have a home on the Red River. There are a lot of trees along the river and a golf course across the river with lots of old trees. Apparently there is enough habitat to sustain Pileated Woodpeckers as they come to their bird feeder often.
This male is attacking the suet feeder.
In human terms he is a tidy bird as he cleans up the crumbs after making a mess!!
