Thanks Ben - I have given up on using a tripod for this type of subject and go for handheld using 1/400s @f/10 and auto-ISO. Much easier to grab the quick shots I need for scenes like this one without the tripod.
Sweet! Nicely seen & captured. The surf layers, rock placement are a great composition.
Thanks Dan - rare for me to shoot in the forests without a tripod but in bright sunlight with fast moving subjects like waves the tripod is more of a nuisance than an aid.

Thanks Jim - I really did see 6" waves when I first got here last Sunday and it reminded me of the kiddie pool at a municipal swimming facility. Certainly more than just a chop in this case but rather puny compared to the waves I saw at Cape Perpetua a few weeks back. I was hoping for some serious winter storm surf on this trip and so far what you see above has been the peak for this week. I was under the impression that there would be bigger stuff today but that didn't pan out. Tomorrow is a major winter storm with high wind warnings out for 50-70mph winds and swells should reach the 15-20' range. We are supposed to get a couple of inches of rain with that so not sure how shooting conditions will pan out. Might be a good day for the iPhone since it can handle those kind of conditions better than my DSLR.I looks like a lot more then a chop to me Alan. I sure like the look of this, but from your title I was expecting a bunch of 6" waves coming in....
