19th century Turku

The city of Turku burned down in the year 1827. It is still the largest urban fire in the history of Finland and other nordic countries. It burned down about 75% of the whole city. There were casualties and for example, Most Finnish archives, including practically all material from the Middle ages, was destroyed in the fire.

One of the few areas protected from the fire is Luostarinmäki ( Cloister Hill area). Today it serves as a museum. There are dozens of workers who wear authentic clothing, make books, cloths, etc with the old ways. A very nice place to visit!

That looks like a really interesting place to explore. Neat to see the efforts to keep the mood of the place alive with the period attire and tasks.

This is super interesting Matti!

That's sad that so much of that town burnt down, but it's great that an area survived and is still being lived in an old fashioned way.

These photos are great too. You did a great job, some of the photos you took feel like that they were taken 100 years ago. Especially #2, 3 and 5.
